Your eating habits have a great impact on you oral health, and that fact will not change if you choose to get veneers. But you may wonder if veneers will force you to make major changes to your diet. Will you have to give up your favorite snacks and meals? Read this blog post to discover helpful information.
Temporary vs. Permanent Veneers
During your treatment process, you will wear two sets of veneers. The first set is designed to last just a few weeks, so they are not particularly durable. You will have to take extra precautions so they do not break, incur stains, or get pulled off of your teeth.
Once you transition to permanent veneers, you will be able to eat virtually anything. Permanent veneers are incredibly strong, and they are capable of standing up to all the rigors of normal, everyday eating and drinking. Of course, they are not invincible, so you will still need to exercise reasonableness when you are choosing what to consume.
What Foods Should You Avoid with Veneers?
Here are some examples of foods that you should cut back on (or avoid altogether) after you get veneers:
- Extremely hard foods. Items like ice, raw vegetables, and jawbreaker candies all have the potential to break your veneers.
- Highly pigmented items. Permanent veneers are resistant to stains but not totally impervious to them. You should be careful not to overindulge in things like grape juice, coffee, and black tea. (When you drink highly pigmented beverages, enjoy them through a straw so they have minimal contact with your teeth.)
- Alcohol. Alcohol could compromise the adhesive that is used to secure veneers onto your teeth.
- Sticky foods. Caramels, taffy, and other extremely sticky food might pull temporary veneers right off your teeth.
What Can You Eat with Veneers?
Here is a short list of foods that are considered to be quite safe for veneers:
- Soft foods. Cooked vegetables, pasta, poultry, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes are all good choices.
- Minimally pigmented foods. White pasta sauce, white dairy products, bananas, and other items with little coloration can keep your smile looking bright.
- Nutrient-dense foods that support oral health. Items that are rich in calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin D can support the wellness of the teeth under your veneers.
Veneers may motivate you to make a few minor changes to your diet, but you should still be able to indulge in all of your favorite foods!
